St Mary's Church Molland

St Mary, Molland

St. Mary’s Church, Molland sits in the centre of the village, together with the pub, The London Inn, and village hall. We seek to be a sacred space for all to enjoy, both inside and out, whether for a quiet prayer, or to come to a Sunday service, or to celebrate the important festivals of Christmas, Easter and Harvest.

Whilst visiting the church, we hope you will take time to explore the churchyard. Early in the year, there is an abundance of snowdrops which are succeeded by a mass of daffodils, primroses and dandelions. Hence, there is little grass mowing until early May. Even then, some areas are left unmown, particularly around the perimeter for the grasses and wildflowers to grow for the benefit of the bees, butterflies, birds and other creatures – slowworms and hedgehogs for example. During the summer months we have swallows returning each year to raise their young above the light in the porch.

Also, rest awhile and observe the surrounding countryside of this area in North Devon and on a clear day the outline of the Dartmoor Tors can be seen.

A brief history of the Church of St Mary

The nave and the tower of the church are fifteenth century in age and replaced an earlier building, the north aisle being added in the sixteenth. The font is Norman (twelfth century) and is the only surviving part of the earlier church. One of the main features of the church are the box pews, 44 of them with their individual doors which date from the 1740
